Summary

Sans is the brother of Papyrus and a major character in UNDERTALE. He works as a sentry in the Underground, and doesn't take most of the stuff happening round him seriously, like never paying to Grillby his debts. Lazy and frivolous with a knack for making puns and jokes, loves hot dogs and unlike his brother, he has no interest in capturing humans. Despite being described as the "easiest enemy", he's actually the final boss of the Genocide Route, due to his abilities and patterns that even someone like Chara would have a hard time to deal with.

Powers and Stats

Dimensionality: 3D

Threat Level: Wolf

Powers and Abilities: Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Longevity (Monsters can live thousands of years), Inorganic Physiology (Type 1), Magic, Non-Physical Interaction, SOUL Manipulation, Absorption, Fusionism and Transformation (Monsters in UNDERTALE are made of magic like Humans are made of water, allowing them to use magic-based attacks even as physical ones. Said magic can be used to attack both the SOUL and body, and was shown to even be able to damage Mad Dummy, who is a non-physical spirit that couldn't be harmed from Frisk due to them lacking magic on their own. If a monster defeats a human, they can absorb the latter's SOUL, transforming in "a horrible beast with unfathomable power". Should be able to merge their SOUL with the one they've absorbed like Asriel and Chara did), Statistics Amplification (The more he kills, the more his LOVE increases, raising his STATs), Danmaku, Creation and Unconventional Intangibility (Type 4: Can create a huge amount of bones of various shapes and sizes to use against the opponent, with some of them being blue attacks, which phase through the opponent without damaging them only if they don't move while they're hit from it. Has a better control on said bones than his brother), Teleportation (Shown here), Durability Negation (His attacks have the KARMA effect, which acts like a poison which quicky drains the HPs of the SOUL, and the more the opponent is hit, the more their HPs are drained. They also bypass Chara's Invulnerability frames, other than easily killing them in few hits thanks to said ability if they don't dodge enough of his attacks, even if they're at LV 19 and with full HPs. Flowey implied that Sans killed him many times right thanks to this power when he was talking about both him and Papyrus, despite lacking a SOUL), Gravity Manipulation and Telekinesis (Immensely superior to Papyrus', to the point of being able to fling the opponent in all direction, even against the ceiling or walls, directly damaging them everytime they crash on the surfaces. The opponent is also forced to move on the ceiling/wall if Sans launches them there with this ability), Limited Law Manipulation (Can abuse of the RPG mechanic of fights being turn based, extending his turn at will, making his opponent unable to attack as it's not their turn yet), Summoning (Of his Gaster Blasters), Fourth Wall Awareness (Able to directly attack the Fight Menu. He's aware of what the RESET is), Information Analysis (Can judge people from seeing their LV, and thus being able to know their previous actions. Can also guess how many times Chara has died against him from just reading their face), Resistance to Heat Manipulation (Monsters could travel across the Underground to reach the New Home, meaning that they went through Hotland without being affected from the immense temperatures, which are high enough to evaporate water along with the cup containing it in a short time), Radiation Manipulation (The Gamerblood Energy Drink, which is made of radioactive waste, is considered a regular energy drink for the monsters in the Underground) and SOUL Manipulation (Can take SOUL Attacks as physical ones, due to their SOUL being strong as their material body), Possibly to Poison Manipulation (Comparable to other monsters who can stay indefinitely in the CORE, which is likely filled of Ozone) and Extreme Cold (Can stay indefinitely at Snowdin, where the ice can resist Hotland's temperatures without melting, with Undyne pointing out at how cold it is, though this can be just a background inconsistency, thus just a product of Game Mechanics). His Gaster Blasters have Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Inorganic Physiology (Type 2), Energy Projection and Flight (Type 2)

Physical Strength: Wall Level Striking Strength. At least Class 10 Lifting Strength with Telekinesis (Can effortessly overpower a LV 19 Chara)

Attack Potency: Wall (Has only 1 ATK, thus being called the "easiest enemy, who can deal only 1 damage", though he's still stronger than Snowdrake's Mother and LV 1 Base DETERMINATION Frisk)

Durability: Wall (Equal to his ATK as he has 1 DEF)

Speed: Human travel speed with Massively Hypersonic combat speed and at least Massively Hypersonic+ reactions (Able to consistently fight against a LV 19 Chara, with the latter never being able to hit him, even after getting their speed amped with the Sea Tea). At least Massively Hypersonic+ attack speed with Gaster Blasters (Only way Chara can avoid their attacks is from aim dodging)

Intelligence: Super Genius (In spite of appereances from his laziness, Sans is actually extremely intelligent, as he can fully understand space-time anomalies thanks to his studies and researches, discovering what a RESET is and all its mechanics, other than being aware of all the aspects of the 4th wall and take benefits from them. Sans is able to understand how much LV someone has gained and how many times someone has died against him from just reading their face [though there's a limit of how much deaths he can read]. Is an excellent fighter, who's able to compensate his lack of physical power with the deadliest attacks of the game)

Stamina: Likely Average (Able to fight Chara, however he'd get tired soon if he fights for too much time, despite being still able to dodge in his sleep)

Range: Melee, Tens of meters, possibly Hundreds of meters with attacks. Unknown, but far higher with Teleportation

Weakness: Extremely lazy, won't fight unless he feels that is actually necessary like in the Genocide Route. His bones can be blue attacks, which deal no damage if the opponent stands still when hit. He can't extent his turn forever, as he'll eventually sleep, losing control over the extention of his turn, other than not being able to attack while extending his turn. If a monster faces a being with an extremely high murderous intent, and the monster doesn't want to fight back, it will extremely weaken.

Arsenal

Standard Equipment: Gaster Blasters, bones and a ketchup bottle.

Noteworthy Techniques and Abilities

  • SOUL Manipulation - Blue Mode: Similar to his brother, Sans turns his opponent's SOUL blue, giving it "gravity" and allowing him to more easily hit his foes. However, Sans appears to have a far greater mastery of this ability than Papyrus, allowing him to effortlessly fling his foe around by manipulating their SOUL, or effectively 'changing gravity' and forcing them to move along the walls or ceiling.
  • Bone Attacks: Sans will send a massive amount of bones at his opponent, forcing them to think on their feet to dodge all of them. He will mix up his style, forcing his foes to jump through small gaps between bones, over pits full of dozens of bones, or even to rush along the platforms so that they don't fall into a deadly trap composed of dozens upon dozens of bones. Sans will often throw in blue bones, which while they cannot be dodged, will only hurt his opponent if they attempt to move through them as opposed to allowing it to pass harmlessly through. While these attacks hardly seem to so any damage initially, the damage quickly racks up from remaining in contact with them, allowing this relatively weak opponent a way of bypassing the defenses of superior foes.
  • KARMA: Whatever is struck by one of Sans' attacks will suffer from this condition, for a brief period. It essentially functions as poison damage for one's SOUL.
  • Gaster Blasters: Can summon dozenn of weird devices in the shape of skulls which fire powerful lasers from their maws. Like Sans' bones, Gaster Blasters will often be used in numbers and will deal KR damage.
  • Teleportation: While Sans is unable to reset the universe in the manner of someone such as Frisk or Flowey, he has shown to have a useful form of teleportation, allowing him to teleport not only himself but objects and other people, as well. During a battle, Sans will often teleport his opponent, himself, and his attacks, not only moving out of harm's way but moving his foe into the path of a new attack. He has also shown the ability to restrain an enemy by repeatedly warping them back to their initial position.

— Sans warning Chara about how bad of an idea it is to fight him

it's a beautiful day outside. birds are singing, flowers are blooming... on days like these, kids like you... Should be burning in hell.
— Sans' final judgement on Chara

geeettttttt dunked on!!! if we're really friends... you won't come back.
— Sans to Chara after killing them from attempting to offer to him their MERCY

You dirty brother killer.
— Sans' judgement to Frisk if they killed Papyrus in a Neutral Route

...but you. you never gained any LOVE. 'course, that doesn't mean you're completely innocent or naive. just that you kept a certain tenderness in your heart. no matter the struggles or hardships you faced... you strived to do the right thing. you refused to kill anyone. even when you ran away, you did it with a smile. you never gained LOVE, but you gained love. does that make sense? maybe not. ...now. you're about to face the greatest challenge of your journey. your actions here... will determine the fate of the entire world. if you refuse to fight... asgore will take your soul and destroy humanity. but if you kill agore and go home... monsters will remain trapped underground. what will you do? ...if i were you, i would have trown in the towel by now. but you didn't get this far from giving up, did you? that's right. you have something called "determination". so as long as you hold on... so as long as you do what's in your heart... i believe you can do the right thing... alright. we're all counting on you, kid. good luck.
